In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, OneWorld, in collaboration with Susan G. Komen® Great Plains and Binational Health Week, hosted two women’s health events in October. When women have access to health information and screening services, breast cancer can be detected earlier, so OneWorld is committed to providing information and screening opportunities to our low-income, underserved patients. Early detection and effective treatment provide the best chance of survival from breast cancer.
On Oct. 4, OneWorld’s Women’s Health Center hosted a Women’s Health Night as part of Binational Health Week. Binational Health Week is an international effort to improve the health and well-being of the underserved Latino population that lives in the U.S. and Canada. During the week, government agencies and community-based organizations come together to conduct a series of health promotion and health education activities. On the evening of Oct. 4th, women in the Omaha community—not just established patients—were able to come to OneWorld for free breast health information, healthy food, STD testing, family planning services, flu shots, immunization reviews and more.
Shortly after the Women’s Health Night event, Susan G. Komen® Great Plains donors supported our patients by sponsoring another Mobile Mammography event on Oct. 10. On that day, 22 provider-referred OneWorld patients were able to receive free mammograms onsite at OneWorld’s Women’s Health Center. These women would not have been able to receive mammograms otherwise because of insufficient income. Click here to watch WOWT’s coverage of the Oct. 10 Mobile Mammography event.
In addition to providing screening services and information to patients, OneWorld employees and partners also stepped up to support breast cancer fighters and survivors throughout the month. Staff members had the opportunity to order special pink polo shirts to support the cause, and several employees participated in the 2017 Komen Nebraska Race for the Cure® on Oct. 8 by running in the race and by staffing a OneWorld table at the health fair inside the Baxter Arena.
In addition to sponsoring Mobile Mammography events at OneWorld, Susan G. Komen® Great Plains donors support clinical breast exams at well-woman exams and traditional mammography at local health systems. With their assistance, our uninsured patients are able to receive needed breast cancer screenings. Thank you, donors of Susan G. Komen® Great Plains!
