Each year, National Health Center Week in early August is an opportunity for OneWorld and our fellow 1,400 community health centers across the country to celebrate our accomplishments and raise awareness about the importance of access to quality health care and supportive services. Community health centers nationwide serve 27 million patients, and that number continues to grow along with the demand for affordable primary care. Last year at OneWorld, our clinics served 41,868 individual patients—4,097 more people than in 2016.

This year, National Health Center Week is Sunday, August 12 – Saturday, August 18, and the theme is “Celebrating Health Centers: Home of America’s Health Care Heroes.” With this theme in mind, we will be devoting time during the week to recognize and reward our employees for the challenging work they do every day. Not only do our employees provide medical care, dental care, behavioral health services, affordable medications, health education and more for underserved members of our community, but they also work to ensure that our patients are safe, healthy and treated with respect.

A woman who lives in Denver recently sent a note to OneWorld to express her gratitude for the way a few of our employees went above and beyond for her sister who has developmental disabilities.

“I wanted to express my great appreciation and thanks for the work that you do and the fine employees you have,” she wrote. “I recently helped my sister apply to access your services, and our experience overall was wonderful. Employees in your offices in South Omaha were extremely helpful and efficient … My sister has trouble understanding things at times, and the South Omaha enrollment team was patient and helpful to her in explaining the services for which she qualifies. I am so thankful you are there for low-income Omaha residents such as my sister!”

To thank OneWorld employees for continuously offering top-quality care for our patients, the following events have been planned for the days surrounding National Health Center Week:

  • Wednesday, August 8: Employees will decorate and staff department booths at our monthly all-staff meeting so that everyone can learn more about the work OneWorld departments do every day. Human Resources will provide coffee and smoothies.

  • Friday, August 10: OneWorld’s 2018 Back-to-School Bash will help patient families access the materials and resources they need to help their children achieve academic success during the upcoming school year.

  • Monday, August 13: The kids from Imagination Station, our on-site childcare center, will participate in a “parade of superheroes” in the administration building!

  • Wednesday, August 15: Employees will be encouraged to donate gift cards to gas stations, grocery stores, clothing stores, etc. for our patients in need. Our social assistance workers will hand out these gift cards as needed.

  • Thursday, August 16: Fresh fruit will be delivered to employees at their workplaces.

  • Friday, August 17: Employees who have worked at OneWorld for 10 or more years will attend an appreciation luncheon.

  • Friday, August 17: Executive Leadership team members are invited to attend a social mixer.

  • Saturday, August 18: OneWorld will face Charles Drew Health Center in our “FQHC showdown” softball game. Fans are encouraged to wear their health center apparel and bring signs to cheer on their teams!
