In January 2023, Rosa entered the OneWorld Northwest Clinic for her first dental appointment. She settled into an exam chair, and began talking to the team about her health background. Through this discussion, Rosa mentioned she was 12 weeks pregnant.

“Right away, we asked her if she had established prenatal care anywhere, and she said no, so we talked to her about the OneWorld Women’s Health Clinic,” said Dental Hygienist, Cori Garrett, BSDH, PHRDH. “We wanted to help her learn about the importance of prenatal care, and that by treating her oral conditions she could improve her pregnancy outcomes.”

Through multiple appointments, Garrett, Dental Assistants, Jasmin Duran, Cristina Pachon and Gabriella Trujillo, Dental Front Desk Receptionist, Angy Roman Garcia, and Dentists Abby Locke, DDS, and Andrea Stahlecker, DDS, helped Rosa with her dental treatment plan and spoke to her about the importance of oral health.

“It was a team effort to overcome the language barrier, ensure she could afford her needed treatment and empower her to improve her oral hygiene,” said Garrett. “There is a lot of information to take in, and we wanted to make sure we provided as much education as possible.”

Soon after her first dental appointment, Rosa went to the OneWorld Women’s Health Clinic to establish prenatal care. She primarily worked with Peter Schindler, MD, Ph.D., Family Medicine Physician, and University of Nebraska Medical Center residents throughout her pregnancy and gave birth to her child in July.

Garrett said the dental team was thrilled to see Rosa connect with the women’s health team, and to help her achieve a healthier smile all at the same time.

“We educate, coordinate and advocate for our patients every day,” said Garrett. “We have so many wonderful services and when we all work together we get to see our patients leave our clinics happier and healthier.”
